When working on home renovation projects or on project at a commercial facility, renting scaffolding can make it easier and safer for everyone. Trying to be on ladders can be dangerous on its own but it becomes even more so when you're juggling tools and equipment for the project.

Before you decide to rent scaffolding, it's good to understand the different types so you ensure you choose the right one for your project. While the rental agency can help you determine the best choice, note the following so you know what to expect and how to choose the scaffolding you'll need.

1. Suspended scaffolding

This type of scaffolding doesn't have legs but is supported from the ceiling or roof of a building. It's often used for window washers of tall buildings but may also be used in areas where a base cannot be supported, such as repairing a building's ceiling when the floors are not in good repair or rooms are too narrow and cannot support the size of weight of standard scaffolding.

2. Rolling or mobile scaffolding

This type of scaffolding is used mostly for indoor projects, as it will have casters or wheels on the legs for easier movement. If being used outdoors, it's important to note that it only be used on level ground such as concrete or asphalt, as the wheels may not provide a secure footing on soft soil.

Rolling scaffolding can make it easier to move the scaffolding around a project, but be sure you choose between interior and exterior scaffolding, as interior wheels may be too small and thin to be used on concrete. Exterior wheels may also be thick and with deeper treads which in turn might damage carpet fibers and other flooring inside a building.

3. Aerial lifts

This type of scaffolding is mobile in that it has a scissor lift under the platform of the scaffolding; it may be in the back of a truck or it may work like a backhoe, with its own engine. The aerial lift allows the person in the scaffolding to move it up and down more easily so they can work on different heights without having to climb off and manually adjust the scaffolding. These too will be available in both interior and exterior features; interior aerial lifts will be compact enough to fit through doorways but not always strong enough to stay secure in soft soil and mud.
