When you're ready to buy a new home, you can choose a home that's one the market or you can work with a builder and general contractor to invest in a custom designed built new home. There are many advantages to having a custom home built other than just being able to pick out the finishes and size you want, and some of those advantages may surprise you. Note a few reasons why you might consider a custom built home versus one that's already for sale so you can decide if it's the right choice for you.

1. Preparing for an older age

As you get older, you may know that staying in your current home or finding a home on the market that will accommodate your physical challenges can be difficult. If you have any medical concerns now or which will become more difficult to manage as you get older, you can consider this in a custom designed home. You might have an elevator or lift installed so you don't need to manage stairs while still having the room needed for the kids and grandkids to visit. You might also include custom railings in the design of the home so you're able to maintain your balance without having to install industrial-looking railings in hallways and bathrooms.

Preparing for an older age can also mean preparing for your elderly parents to eventually live with you. A custom home might include a separate mother-in-law suite with its own small kitchen and full bathroom, and even with a separate entrance for maximum privacy. These types of features can be difficult to find in a home on the market but they can make you and your family more comfortable overall.

2. Modern computerised system and compatibility

If you love computers and electronic gadgets, you may find that a custom home can be the right choice for you. Having a new home built can mean the fiber optic wiring that will support your demands for data, along with added electrical outlets and even built-in charging stations meant for smartphones and tablets.

Your custom home might also include built-in surge protectors in the area where you'll plug in your TV, DVD player, computer, and the like. This will keep you from having to run extension cords with surge protectors all over the space. You can even design space for projector screens and other fun accessories that make your computer use or movie watching more enjoyable and easier than if you tried to update a home already on the market.
