A roof truss is a set of beams that are used to create the frame of a new home's roof; they are typically set in a triangular shape and connected with metal plates, screws, and other such fasteners. Trusses are not used as often today as they once were, as homes are now typically constructed with what is called a matchstick design, or studs that are cut onsite as the home is built. If you are having a new home built, you may want to consider a roof truss and working with a truss manufacturer instead of a standard matchstick design. Note a few reasons why this is and why they can be a good choice for your home.

1. Exposed or not

Working with roof trusses gives you more choices when it comes to the overall design and look of your home. You can leave the trusses exposed and create an open, airy feeling to your home with lots of space, and the trusses themselves offer some eye-catching appeal. If you don't paint the trusses, this can also create a very rustic look.

2. No construction waste

When you choose to have manufactured roof trusses for your new home, you have less construction waste. These trusses are made in advance to your specifications and then delivered to the jobsite. With standard construction of matchstick homes, beams and studs are cut onsite and, in turn, there can be quite a bit of wasted wood. This can mean having paid for wood that isn't used and having wood tossed out that could otherwise be used for other projects, which is not a very eco-friendly choice. Construction cleanup can also be very costly, so using precut trusses can save you money on this cost.

3. Less specialized labor

Cutting beams onsite when a home is being built is very labor-intensive, and this labor can add to the time it takes to build your new home. When you work with a roof truss manufacturer, the trusses are made ahead of time and then delivered to the jobsite as needed. In turn, they are ready to be used according to your construction schedule; you may face fewer potential delays when you choose trusses over standard cut beams and studs.

It's also good to note that you would need to hire carpenters to create the roof studs needed for standard construction, and this means specialized labor. This can be costly and can add to the overall expense of having a new home built, versus roof trusses made in a factory without the need of specialized carpenters.
